When two musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.

The all-time outrageous, satirical, comedy farce favorite, Some Like It Hot (1959) is one of the most hilarious, raucous films ever made. The ribald film is a clever combination of many elements: a spoof of 1920-30′s gangster films with period costumes and speakeasies, and romance in a quasi-screwball comedy with one central joke – entangled and deceptive identities, reversed sex roles and cross-dressing. In fact, one of the film’s major themes is disguise and masquerade – e.g., the drag costumes of the two male musicians, Joe’s disguise as a Cary Grant-like impotent millionaire, and Jerry’s happiness with a real wealthy, yacht-owning retiree.

It’s also a black and white film (reminiscent of the early film era) filled with non-stop action (e.g., the initial car chase), slapstick, and one-liners reminiscent of Marx Brothers and Mack Sennett comedies.

The exceptional film was the all-time highest-grossing comedy up to its time.The film was inspired by director Kurt Hoffmann’s German movie comedy/musicalFanfares of Love (1951) (aka Fanfaren der Liebe) with a similar plot element that writer/director Wilder borrowed: two down-on-their-luck, unemployed jazz musicians dress up as women in order to get two weeks of work in an all-women’s dance band bound for Florida, after witnessing a gang-land massacre in Prohibition-Era Chicago and being pursued by the mob.

Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the movie will be followed by a Raffle and Q&A with the Kill Speed producers Deanna Shapiro and Gary McClurg.

Donations will be taken at the door and all proceeds for will go to the recovery efforts of the May 22nd Joplin tornado.

This is the first public screening of the film in the USA.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
This year the Show Me Justice Film Festival takes place on October 13, 14, and 15, 2011. This year’s festival is being coordinated by the UCM Department of Communication.

Through the powerful medium of film, our goal is to impact the community, the state, and the world to inspire individual and collective action against social injustice like racism, sexism, poverty, and other ills that plague our society. Filmmakers from around the world are encouraged to submit feature length narrative and documentary films, and short narrative, experimental, animated, and documentary films that put a face on the many shades of social injustice and offer a variety of real experiences, sharing their stories with audiences from around the Midwest and beyond.

This is the 2nd year of the festival and the first year that the University of Central Missouri has been involved in producing the festival. Last year’s festival featured the now-Oscar nominated film Winter’s Bone (which was set in the Show Me state) among many other films.

To verify if a heat advisory is in effect in their community, guests should visit www.weather.gov and enter their zip code. The webpage, from the National Weather Service, is the official (and only) determining factor regarding heat advisory status.

The National Weather Service issues heat advisories whenever the heat index (how hot the temperature feels when humidity is factored) reaches 105O F. In addition, if the region reaches 100O F for four or more consecutive days, a heat advisory will be issued. Wehrenberg Theatres will also lower prices during an excessive heat warning which is when heat advisory conditions are met on consecutive days. (Please note an excessive heat watch means the proper conditions are forecast, but the discounts only become official once the conditions are actually met.)

During these times of extreme heat, the government agency advises spending time in air-conditioned buildings and drinking plenty of fluids. Of course, Wehrenberg Theatres not only have air-conditioning, but offer plenty of ice-cold drinks to quench thirsts and cool a body down.

Both guests and community officials warmly welcomed previous “Heat Advisory Days.” Guests can take advantage of this special offer and cool down in any Missouri or Illinois Wehrenberg Theatre. The special pricing is available for any movie starting before 4 PM at any participating theatre on any day, including weekends.

Matinee pricing affects tickets purchased at the theatre box offices only. Purchase must be for movies on the same day as the heat advisory. This matinee pricing does not apply to on-line or phone purchases through Fandango, or for any advance ticket purchases.

Outdoor Movies are a contemporary version of the drive-in theater at a park on Springfield’s founding site. Enjoy some of today’s new release and pre-home release movies. It’s a wonderful way for the family to enjoy summer nights. This year’s movies will again be themed as “Family Night” on Fridays and “Date Night” on Saturdays. All movies are rated G, PG, or PG-13

SATO 48 Partnership
We are happy to again partner with Springfield And The Ozarks (SATO) 48 organizers to highlight several of the filmmakers who participated in the 6th annual SATO 48 film challenge. Teams competed in creating a five-minute short film over the course of a single weekend – 48 hours in spring 2011. None of the teams know what their film must be about until they all open, simultaneously, a secret “Inspiration Package,” which describes the criteria of the short film. It is then up to each individual filmmaking team to interpret the criteria, produce their 5-minute film, and deliver it within the 48-hour time limit. Join us before the selected feature films to sample some of the talented local filmmakers’ work.

The highly-buzzed about revival of Company features an all-star cast of television and stage heavyweights. Headlining the production are (in alphabetical order): Craig Bierko, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Katie Finneran, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks, Aaron Lazar, Patti LuPone, Jill Paice, Martha Plimpton, Anika Noni Rose, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jim Walton and Chryssie Whitehead. Sondheim specialist Paul Gemignani conducts the New York Philharmonic with Jonathan Tunick’s original orchestrations. Lonny Price is the director; Josh Rhodes is the choreographer; Lonny Price and Matt Cowart are the producers and Ellen M. Krass is the executive producer.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, Company follows five couples and their bachelor friend, Robert (Harris), exploring the true meaning of being in a relationship through a series of vignettes.

Company marks the latest addition to Screenvision’s alternate content strategy, designed to bring events from the worlds of fine arts, sports, children’s programming and engaging documentary programming to the movie theater environment. These events are designed to provide patrons across North America an opportunity to experience captivating programming to which they otherwise would not likely have
access.

In 180 Wade plays Gavin Larson, the egotistical and flamboyant lead singer of the rock group The Zebras. After Gavin’s bandmates perish in a plane crash Gavin begins a self-destructive spiral fueled by guilt and self-medication. Gavin soon learns that his only hope for redemption rests in the bridges he burned long ago.
“The film is a quirky comedy, but also a drama at its very heart,” said William Price, the film’s Executive Producer and screenwriter who grew up in Springfield, but now resides in Los Angeles. “It’s unpredictable, funny, sad, happy, and motivating. We’re going to give our audience an experience they will never forget.”

Admission to the black tie event is $20 and includes the screening, both concerts, and an interactive Q&A with the film’s cast.

Gold pass members will also receive priority admission for preferred seating. Film posters and soundtrack CD’s will be available exclusively at the premiere, and in limited quantities. Formal attire is recommended, but not required.

Tickets for a second screening of the film on June 18th will be available for sale at the Gillioz box office on the date of the screening.
