SPRINGFIELD, MO (October 1, 2008) – Springfield’s first MOTION MEDIA EXPO will be held at the Keyes Art Gallery, 229 South Market Avenue, Friday, October 10th, 8:00 to 11:00 PM.

This Motion Media Expo has been organized for producers, directors, filmmakers, composers, writers, designers, talent and a host of supporting services to the film industry. Green Glass Productions’ producer Jonna Volz-Howes has purposed to create a networking and sales environment for independent and production businesses in the region by putting them all in the same room. “Here they can sell themselves as employees or employers of productions companies by showcasing their portfolios and skills,” says Howes. “We want to bring together a diverse group of people in an artistic and comfortable environment and entertain them with music and a fashion show, offering food and beverages as well.”

Registration is required for Businesses and Individuals who desire to be in the MFAS’ film Directory and to be showcased by displaying their marketing tools via print and digital formats at the Expo. Details and costs for registration can be seen at www.greenglassproductions.net. Deadline for business entries is October 6, 2008. For non-registrants, there will be a cover charge of $10 at the door.

Steve Olson, president of the Missouri Film Alliance Springfield, says, “We are excited to be working with Jonna Howes and Green Glass Productions in their efforts to bring this Motion Media Expo to Springfield. We have witnessed significant growth over the last four years in the community of filmmakers and supporting organizations in the Southwest Missouri region. The Expo will play an important role in developing a comprehensive film directory of the talent and services in our community. And, the directory is a critical marketing tool for MFAS as we continue to promote the benefits of filming in Southwest Missouri.” The MFAS office will manage the ongoing maintenance of the Directory. October marks the fourth anniversary of the founding of MFAS.

Music talent scheduled to perform during the evening include Cornbelt Chorus, Rhett Roberson, Lyal Strickland, and Jeremy Larson.

A Fashion Show will also be presented by local designers and wardrobiers Cross Rags, Jacqueline’s, Vintage Vice, and more.

Green Glass Productions, founded in 2008 by Jonna Volz-Howes, is registered with the State of Missouri, business address is PO Box 905, Springfield MO 65801. Fax number is 417-865-3191.

The Motion Media Expo is a cooperative event with sponsorship from MFAS and Stonegate Creative Group.

SENT VIA THE STLFILMWIRE:

Lindenwood University is looking for undergraduate students who want to do real graduate work and be part of our team. That person or persons will have the opportunity to work in our new HD studio (Avid spokespersons mentioned it at the NAB convention in Las Vegas this past week), use the P2 tapeless format, train on a Grass Valley switcher, use robotic cameras in our 1200 seat theatre, use HMI lighting, have a Chapman Pee Wee dolly at their disposal, work on Avid’s iNEWS system, edit on Avid and Final Cut Pro, and possibly have access to the new Red camera system in a new Digital Media Arts program (still pending).

This new state-of-the art studio will be good to go in August/September 2008.

You could start before then. We are installing equipment now, and this summer we will begin training on the new formats. You could be a part of something special.

LU will be teaching convergence, backpack journalism, and writing for the web. We have Emmy award-winning writers and producers, former news anchors, and renowned documentary editors teaching classes. You will be able to write, produce, direct, and edit your own programs which might be shown on LUTV, our digital channel on Charter.

If this opportunity sounds like something you might be interested in, please call Peter Carlos at 636.949.4513 or email me at pcarlos@lindenwood.edu for an interview. Let’s do lunch.

Stephens Summer Film Institute
May 14-25, 2008
Stephens College campus in Columbia, Mo.

The 12-day hands-on, intensive workshop will give female filmmakers of all ages the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of filmmaking such as directing, cinematography, lighting, sound, script, and the producer’s unit. Students work alongside industry professionals to create several short-format film projects that ultimately will be screened in theatres and at festivals.

Each summer, SFI brings in professional filmmakers to train students in hands-on filmmaking and speak about the nature of working in the film business. Students rotate through each position on a film set and learn valuable technical skills that prepare them for work in the film industry while creating three film projects from beginning to end. A network of professional filmmakers helps guide students in their future careers.

Space is limited so interested filmmakers are encouraged to apply early.
Summer Film Institute at Stephens College, Columbia, MO scheduled for May 14-25, 2008

By GARETH HARDING, Wall Street Journal
January 4, 2008

The filmmaker as “author,” or dominant creative force behind a movie, was first described in a famous 1954 magazine article by François Truffaut, who drew a distinction between directors like Jean Renoir and Alfred Hitchcock, who sought to “bring something genuinely personal” to their films, and the hack-for-hire directors who had predominated under the Hollywood studio system.

Since then, every decade has had its dominant European filmmakers — from Truffaut himself, Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman and Milos Forman in the 1960s and ’70s to Krzysztof Kieslowski, Pedro Almodóvar, Lars Von Trier, Ken Loach and Emir Kusturica in the ’80s and ’90s. These directors were known for highbrow, meticulously made, and sometimes difficult- to-watch movies that made personal, political or artistic statements.

But many critics now say European cinema is in a kind of identity crisis as it attempts to compete against mega-budget Hollywood movies — not to mention the steady supply of art-house or “indie” films from across the Atlantic — while remaining faithful to its tradition of low-budget (and often government-subsidized) auteurship. Some even argue that the age of the visionary, all-powerful writer/director — personified by the likes of Bergman and Truffaut — is over. “The concept of the ‘film d’auteur’ is nearly dead,” says Dominique Jahn, a movie producer and director of the Brussels film festival, an annual event that emphasizes small, art-house productions. “In Europe, directors are becoming less important and producers more so; while in America, star actors are the bosses.”

Don’t tell that to 24-year-old Swiss director and actor Barthélemy Grossmann, who recently won strong reviews for his debut feature, a thriller called “13m2.”
