Kyaw Tha Hla & Jeff Clinkenbeard announce “SATO48 – 2011″ the 6th annual film challenge where filmmakers from Springfield And The Ozarks (SATO) form teams to compete in creating a five-minute short film over the course of a single weekend – 48 hours.

Registration starts at $20 and is open (fee increases as the event draws nearer).

The Registration Fee includes two tickets to The Moxie Screening, and two tickets to The Awards Ceremony / AfterParty.

The SATO48 – 2011 filmmaking portion of the challenge (the “Kickoff”) will take place starting on Friday, April 15, 2011, 6pm, at the “Community Room” of TheOzarksCW, our Media Sponsor, http://www.theozarkscw.com, 999 W. Sunshine St, Springfield, MO 65807.

The filmmakers will have until the Delivery Deadline, Sunday, April 17, 2011 to make their film.

None of the teams will know what their film must be about until they all open, simultaneously at the Kickoff, a secret envelope (the “Inspiration Package”), which describes the criteria of the short film.

Previous years’ “Inspiration Package” have involved using the number “13,” storylines that involved being very lucky and very un-lucky, as well as prohibiting the use of any guns — not by sight, not by sound, and not by reference–as well as poetry, unusual props, and dialogue requirements.

However, the “Inspiration Package” can be ANYTHING.

Once the filmmakers have received their “Inspiration Package,” it is then up to each of the individual filmmaking teams to interpret the criteria, produce their 5-minute film, and deliver it within the 48-hour time limit.

All films, completed in accordance with the rules of the challenge, will be screened at The Moxie Cinema the next weekend — Saturday, April 23, 2011, and Sunday, April 24, 2011.

The Moxie Cinema screenings are open to the public, and tickets are $5.00 per screening of 10 films.

In addition, the “SATO48 – 2011 Local Selection Committee” — made up of local civic, business, government, education, arts, media, and community leaders — will screen every completed eligible film, and then select the Top Ten Films from each Award category to represent Springfield and the Ozarks for judging by the “SATO48 – 2011 International Judging Panel”.

The SATO48 – 2011 International Judging Panel is a group of filmmaking professionals from around the world who will evaluate each Top Ten Film in the category of their particular expertise: direction, screenwriting, editing, art direction, cinematography, sound, music, male & female acting, and best use of the Inspiration Package (Best Film).

The International Judging Panel’s decisions will be announced at the “SATO48 – 2011 Awards Ceremony” at the Gillioz Theater on a date in May to be determined, where the winning films will be given prizes, and other recognition.

The Awards Ceremony is open to the public, and tickets are $5.00 per person. There is also an Award for Audience Favorite, and Best Movie Poster.

Filmmakers who wish to compete for the Best Movie Poster Award create their entry immediately after the making of their film. Directly following the Awards Ceremony is the SATO48 AfterParty at a location to be determined.

SATO48 – 2011 is open to anyone who is up to the challenge. There is no restriction on age of the participants, size of the team, or type of equipment used. However, all team members must VOLUNTEER their time; no one on the team can be paid for their participation.

Registration is now open at this website

Filmmakers are encouraged to start immediately with the organizing of their team: screenwriter, director, producer, sound recordist, production assistants, etc., scouting locations, sourcing music (only music which the filmmakers have created in the 48-hour period, or music to which they hold the copyright, can be used), and securing actors (a minimum of two characters are required).

Animators may use existing models (clay, computer-generated, cut-out, etc.), but must have at least two voice performances in their film.

THE ORGANIZERS:

KYAW THA HLA & JEFF CLINKENBEARD have collaborated on many projects over the past twenty-five years. Among them, Springfield’s entry in the Simpson’s Movie Premiere Contest; “Ripple,” starring Marcia Cross & Anthony Michael Hall, a short film which screened at the Sundance Film Festival; “Brotherly LoveS,” the New York premiere production of Elysabeth Kleinhans’ Animated Theaterworks; “The Coils of Death,” a full-length comedy billed as a “giant monster movie on stage” which was Los Angeles Magazines Pick of the Month; and “A Baptist Boy Trapped In A Jewish Boys Body,” a one-man show which Backstage called “beautifully funny… perceptive… original and intelligently witty” and was awarded a “Manhattan Association of Cabarets” award. As well as the premiere of SATO48 in 2006, and in subsequent years 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

This is a new, innovative concept that the Council of Churches is excited to bring to our community that will directly benefit our community. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 9th at Remington’s on Republic Road.

The Challenge of 180°
Churches, youth groups and independent organizations are invited to create a 3-minute (180 second) film choosing one or more of the counter-intuitive teachings of Jesus as the subject of your film. The 180 challenge turns the worldly paradigm of possessions, power and prestige upside down. The teachings of Jesus are rich in counter-intuitive thinking. A few examples include if you want to be great, you must be a servant of all; those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it; blessed are the poor; the last shall be first, and the first shall be last. There are countless teachings that can be interpreted with your creativity. Choose one or more of these teachings of importance or one or more that really exemplifies the mission of your organization.

Winning the Challenge – $2000 Prize for 1st Place!
The top ten films will be selected and will be premiered at the event. The top ten films will be selected by an independent panel of judges based upon creativity, content and incorporation of random element. The final winner will be voted on by the attending audience the evening of the event. The film with the most votes will win $2000!

More importantly it reflects the impact that founders Jeff Clinkenbeard and Kyaw Tha Hla have had on the local film community. By attracting almost 90 teams to participate with 77 completing the 48 hour challenge and competing in the festival, the bar has been raised. Significantly!

This year’s challenge takes place March 4-8, 2010.

The Registration deadline is March 3rd.

The International Documentary Challenge is a timed filmmaking competition where filmmakers have 5 days to make a short non-fiction film (4-7 minutes.) All of the registered participants make their films during the same time period (early March) and are required to ship the movie by the deadline. In addition to being restricted on time, the filmmakers must choose between 2 assigned documentary genres (such as Biography, Music, 1st Person, etc.) and are assigned a specific theme (such as “Freedom”) that will dictate the content and direction of their film. The top 12 films (determined by a panel of judges) premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto where the Winners are announced. After the premiere, there are additional theatrical screenings in major cities, possible television exposure and a DVD release of the best films. The films are also streamed on our website for voting for the Audience Award and many films (including non-finalists) can be seen on the SnagFilms Doc Challenge Channel.

It will be up to the Gimme Truth! audience to decide whether Missouri filmmakers have created a profile of a Missourian that is 100% true or 100% false. All submitted entries will be viewed by a panel of judges, and the 10 videos that make the final cut will be part of a game show at the annual True/False Film Fest in Columbia, Missouri.

The screening of the Gimme Truth! films will be in the form of a ’60s-era TV game show a la “What’s My Line” or “Truth or Consequences.” Contestants in the game show will be visiting documentary filmmakers from around the world. As the shorts screen, they will compete against each other guessing which videos are True or False. As they do this, they will also act as judges, picking their favorites from among the 10 finalists. Prizes will be awarded to the ten finalists. Additionally, the top three films will receive cash and in-kind prize packages, with no less than $500 in combined cash and prizes for first prize.

Details can be found here.

Judges’ comments: A very nice newscast open, [though] it’s too long. Excellent work on the easy access story (ordering liquor online). This was a very impressive enterprise story that showed care and proper steps to make sure that the student journalists were not breaking the law. A fine example of student journalism at its best. The video phone story was also well done; it was well shot and edited, and it, too, showed good reporting skills. The story about the football team had really good writing and use of natural sound. Bravo for doing the “chatroom” piece on the 17-year-old brain tumor survivor. Also for including commentary in the newscast. Congratulations to a high school journalism program that puts an emphasis on the fundamentals of ground-breaking reporting, solid writing, and enhanced story telling through video and sound.
