Assistance has been provided by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. on how to best utilize the resources available to Springfield Public Schools through many community arts agency partnerships. Clay Mason and Bryan Manning, professional filmmakers who attended Springfield Public Schools, are producing an original film on the importance of arts education, which will premier at the Moxie workshop event.

The film documents examples of arts programming currently provided for Springfield Public School children, using summer classes underway at Creamery Arts Center, Springfield Little Theatre, Springfield Ballet and the School’s Artworks program. The visual impact of film, as well as the artistry of the filmmakers, will help illustrate how children’s exposure to the arts enriches their potential for developmental and educational success.

Pictured at the monthly meeting of the Arts Program Sustainability Initiative are guest Kelvin Pamperien from Springfield Public Schools and committee members Derek Munson, SRO Lyric Opera; Anji Nowell, Hammon’s Hall; Janice Bennett, Springfield Symphony; Mike Owens, Gillioz Theatre; Bryan Manning; Clay Mason; Scott Giffen, Springfield Arts; and in the front row Randy Russell, Community Foundation of the Ozarks; Beth Doman, Springfield Little Theater; Gloria Galanes, Missouri State University.

Virginia C. Bussey – Individual Award
Virginia C. Bussey for her extended service in promoting and supporting the artistic achievement and growth for area arts organizations in Springfield.

SATO 48 – Organization Award
SATO (Springfield and the Ozarks) 48 for the creation and growth of the local film festival, SATO 48, that now attracts filmmakers from all over the United States and an international panel of judges who decide which films receive awards and nominations.

Cox Health – Corporate Support Award
Cox Health for its long history as a catalyst for growth and creativity in the Springfield arts and culture scene as an arts supporter and collector.

Senator Roy Blunt – Leadership Award
Senator Roy Blunt for his extraordinary leadership in helping invest in the Springfield arts community specifically through a $1.4 million grant that provided arts education opportunities for the entire Southwest Missouri region from 2005-2010 through the U.S. Department of Education.

The first Ozzie Awards were given by the SRAC in 1985 and have since been awarded to those who have embodied the pioneering creative spirit on the Springfield and Southwest Missouri arts scene. Each year a five-member Selection Committee chooses performers, facilitators, benefactors, individuals or organizations which promote, personify and/or support artistic achievement in the Springfield area. The 2011 Ozzie Selection Committee members were William Brandon Bowman, Jerry Clark, Kirk Elmquist, Jeanie Morris and Randy Russell.

The annual award categories this year were modified to fit the new climate of the Springfield arts community.

“Springfield Regional Arts Council has made certain that the Ozzie Awards remain a relevant way to recognize our diverse and ever-growing arts community,” said Randy Russell, Selection Committee Member, “All of this year’s awards reflect changes as that community has grown. The individual award to Virginia Bussey represents many years of dedicated support whereas recognizing SATO 48 represents new programming developed by enthusiastic individuals that now has become an economically self-sustaining, highly regarded community event. The award for the long-time corporate support of Cox Health emphasizes the arts as a viable way to align corporate leadership and non-profit agencies and recognizing Roy Blunt emphasizes the importance of governmental support for the educational development of the children of our region.”

“We are thrilled to welcome the Ozzie Awards to our second annual Flights of Fancy event,” said Shawn Schroeder, acting director of aviation for the Springfield-Branson National Airport. “Flights of Fancy is a living celebration of all the incredible artistic talent southwest Missouri has to offer. Each year we continue to add new elements to the event, to ensure that it’s an occasion to remember.”

The 2011 physical awards are by local artist, Terry Bloodworth, as commissioned by SRAC President, Anna Squires.

Kyaw Tha Hla & Jeff Clinkenbeard announce “SATO48 – 2011″ the 6th annual film challenge where filmmakers from Springfield And The Ozarks (SATO) form teams to compete in creating a five-minute short film over the course of a single weekend – 48 hours.

Registration starts at $20 and is open (fee increases as the event draws nearer).

The Registration Fee includes two tickets to The Moxie Screening, and two tickets to The Awards Ceremony / AfterParty.

The SATO48 – 2011 filmmaking portion of the challenge (the “Kickoff”) will take place starting on Friday, April 15, 2011, 6pm, at the “Community Room” of TheOzarksCW, our Media Sponsor, http://www.theozarkscw.com, 999 W. Sunshine St, Springfield, MO 65807.

The filmmakers will have until the Delivery Deadline, Sunday, April 17, 2011 to make their film.

None of the teams will know what their film must be about until they all open, simultaneously at the Kickoff, a secret envelope (the “Inspiration Package”), which describes the criteria of the short film.

Previous years’ “Inspiration Package” have involved using the number “13,” storylines that involved being very lucky and very un-lucky, as well as prohibiting the use of any guns — not by sight, not by sound, and not by reference–as well as poetry, unusual props, and dialogue requirements.

However, the “Inspiration Package” can be ANYTHING.

Once the filmmakers have received their “Inspiration Package,” it is then up to each of the individual filmmaking teams to interpret the criteria, produce their 5-minute film, and deliver it within the 48-hour time limit.

All films, completed in accordance with the rules of the challenge, will be screened at The Moxie Cinema the next weekend — Saturday, April 23, 2011, and Sunday, April 24, 2011.

The Moxie Cinema screenings are open to the public, and tickets are $5.00 per screening of 10 films.

In addition, the “SATO48 – 2011 Local Selection Committee” — made up of local civic, business, government, education, arts, media, and community leaders — will screen every completed eligible film, and then select the Top Ten Films from each Award category to represent Springfield and the Ozarks for judging by the “SATO48 – 2011 International Judging Panel”.

The SATO48 – 2011 International Judging Panel is a group of filmmaking professionals from around the world who will evaluate each Top Ten Film in the category of their particular expertise: direction, screenwriting, editing, art direction, cinematography, sound, music, male & female acting, and best use of the Inspiration Package (Best Film).

The International Judging Panel’s decisions will be announced at the “SATO48 – 2011 Awards Ceremony” at the Gillioz Theater on a date in May to be determined, where the winning films will be given prizes, and other recognition.

The Awards Ceremony is open to the public, and tickets are $5.00 per person. There is also an Award for Audience Favorite, and Best Movie Poster.

Filmmakers who wish to compete for the Best Movie Poster Award create their entry immediately after the making of their film. Directly following the Awards Ceremony is the SATO48 AfterParty at a location to be determined.

SATO48 – 2011 is open to anyone who is up to the challenge. There is no restriction on age of the participants, size of the team, or type of equipment used. However, all team members must VOLUNTEER their time; no one on the team can be paid for their participation.

Registration is now open at this website

Filmmakers are encouraged to start immediately with the organizing of their team: screenwriter, director, producer, sound recordist, production assistants, etc., scouting locations, sourcing music (only music which the filmmakers have created in the 48-hour period, or music to which they hold the copyright, can be used), and securing actors (a minimum of two characters are required).

Animators may use existing models (clay, computer-generated, cut-out, etc.), but must have at least two voice performances in their film.

THE ORGANIZERS:

KYAW THA HLA & JEFF CLINKENBEARD have collaborated on many projects over the past twenty-five years. Among them, Springfield’s entry in the Simpson’s Movie Premiere Contest; “Ripple,” starring Marcia Cross & Anthony Michael Hall, a short film which screened at the Sundance Film Festival; “Brotherly LoveS,” the New York premiere production of Elysabeth Kleinhans’ Animated Theaterworks; “The Coils of Death,” a full-length comedy billed as a “giant monster movie on stage” which was Los Angeles Magazines Pick of the Month; and “A Baptist Boy Trapped In A Jewish Boys Body,” a one-man show which Backstage called “beautifully funny… perceptive… original and intelligently witty” and was awarded a “Manhattan Association of Cabarets” award. As well as the premiere of SATO48 in 2006, and in subsequent years 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
