Commercial Street, for their new series The Opener. The restaurant was originally named Savor Bakehouse & Cafe but has been shortened at the recommendation of David Adjey.

Adjey is the star of the series, previously seen as a competitor on Iron Chef and star of Restaurant Makeover. In this real life one-hour documentary series, Chef Adjey helps newbie restaurateurs open their dream restaurant – often with their life’s savings on the line. The show premieres August 31 on Food Network Canada.

SBJ.net also notes that Adjey will be on hand for opening night, scheduled for September 6th. Savor is owned by Erik Kinkade and William Peak. Peak, the restaurant’s executive chef, was trained through the culinary arts program at Ozarks Technical Community College, has worked in the kitchens at Flame Steakhouse and Touch, and he most recently was head chef at Metropolitan Grill. Kinkade, who will serve as front of house and business manager, owned Springfield-based Rock and Water LLC, which created fountains, coral reef tanks and oversized lighting for hotels, convention centers, theme parks and zoos. He sold the company a year ago, and Savor is his first go-round in the restaurant business.

You can get an idea of what the show will be like with this clip by Frantic Films used to sell the show.

This is a new, innovative concept that the Council of Churches is excited to bring to our community that will directly benefit our community. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, October 9th at Remington’s on Republic Road.

The Challenge of 180°
Churches, youth groups and independent organizations are invited to create a 3-minute (180 second) film choosing one or more of the counter-intuitive teachings of Jesus as the subject of your film. The 180 challenge turns the worldly paradigm of possessions, power and prestige upside down. The teachings of Jesus are rich in counter-intuitive thinking. A few examples include if you want to be great, you must be a servant of all; those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it; blessed are the poor; the last shall be first, and the first shall be last. There are countless teachings that can be interpreted with your creativity. Choose one or more of these teachings of importance or one or more that really exemplifies the mission of your organization.

Winning the Challenge – $2000 Prize for 1st Place!
The top ten films will be selected and will be premiered at the event. The top ten films will be selected by an independent panel of judges based upon creativity, content and incorporation of random element. The final winner will be voted on by the attending audience the evening of the event. The film with the most votes will win $2000!

It’s still a few weeks away from opening but will get some national attention when it’s featured on The Food Network.

Their new restaurant, Savor, is already generating buzz from The Food Network. “I don’t know if it has actually sunk in,” Kinkade said. “I’m just the kind of person who does one day at a time and see how it goes.”

They will soon appear on “The Opener.” It’s a show about people who are first time restaurant owners. The restaurant is still under construction and a lot of work needs to be done before the camera crews show up.

If all goes as planned camera crews for “The Opener” will arrive in about two weeks. Peak and Kinkade started working on the building almost a year and a half ago and have put in quite a bit of money. They are hoping for a soft opening in August with a grand opening to follow.

We want to show you the new Screening room and Editing Bay that are available for members use.

We are fortunate to have Joe Heyen joining us for the Open House. He is in town to announce the screening of his documentary film in conjunction with an Ozark Mountain Daredevils concert at the Gillioz. Come out and see clips from the film and meet Joe to share notes on documentary filmmaking. Oh, and see our great stuff!

Joe Heyen, producer/director, taught film for 17 years at the college level. He has produced over 300 films and multimedia projects. For the last several years, he has been president of the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City, helping that group to make over 600 shorts and more than 30 features.

Here’s some background on the film and the team that created it:

Cowtown Ballroom: Sweet Jesus is a documentary film about Cowtown Ballroom, a legendary concert venue in Kansas City, Missouri. It was only open for 38 months, but in its short life span established an incredible musical heritage.

The hall itself was a former jazz club named El Torreon Ballroom which opened in 1927. It was a home to the likes of Cab Calloway, Count Basie and even Red Skelton. Its next reincarnation was as a roller skating rink, which lasted for many years. In the summer of 1971 Cowtown Ballroom opened with a concert by The Flying Burrito Brothers. During the next three years it featured an eclectic mix of musicians including Frank Zappa, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Van Morrison, B. B. King and Linda Ronstadt.

Well here is the team:

Anthony Ladesich – Director of Photography/ Editor/ Writer.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Ladesich has been in the business for the better part of a decade. His start came from the documentary show Kansas City Crossroads on Kansas Cities NBC affiliate station. Ladesich won an EMMY AWARD for his work with Crossroads as well as a second EMMY for his own film “Be it ever so humble, there’s no place.
Ladesich now owns his own film and video production boutique called Mile Deep Films & Television…

He learned early in his career that there are two ways to tell a story. You can go a mile wide and an inch deep, which covers a hell of a lot of ground but doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Or you can go an inch wide and a mile deep. When you go a mile deep, you tell a story that will profoundly resonate with an audience… it’s a story that digs down deep and finds a deeper purpose. Those are the stories Ladesich strives to tell.

A working musician since the age of 10, Jimmy Harlow, producer, first played Cowtown Ballroom in 1972 with the group Commonground, opening for Mason Proffit. Shortly thereafter, he joined White Eyes, and subsequently performed there many more times. He now is with the band Camp Harlow, and has been singing and playing keyboards at a weekly matinee in Kansas City for the past 13 years.

In addition to producing and directing four features, Kelley Baker, supervising sound editor, was the sound designer on six of Gus Van Sant’s feature films including, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, GOOD WILL HUNTING, and FINDING FORRESTER. He designed the sound on Todd Haynes’ feature film, FAR FROM HEAVEN, with Dennis Quaid and Julianne Moore. He was an Editor and a Sound Designer for Will Vinton’s The Adventures of Mark Twain, and on four claymation specials for CBS.

Currently working as a Graphic Production Specialist, Debby Schenk came into the Cowtown family just as the Ballroom was closing its doors. In the mid 70s, Cowtown Productions continued to produce an amazing array of music at many venues in the Kansas City area, and Debby was one of the “official” photographers of that era. She assisted in cataloging and preparing still images for the film.
