June 11, 2008 – The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (SLFS), an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. With advances in affordable digital filmmaking, more and more movies are being made in St. Louis and environs, but opportunities for moviegoers to see that work are scarce, because few of the films ever screen commercially. The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase frequently provides the only chance area filmmakers have to display their talents on the big screen.

Sunday-Thursday, July 19-24, 2008
July 19: Filmmaking Seminar/Film Program, RAC
July 20-23: Film Programs, Tivoli Theatre
July 24: Closing-Night Awards Party, Blueberry Hill

The Filmmaking Seminar covers a nice range of topics:
11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Panel #1 – Film on the Wide World Web
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Panel #2 – Distribution
1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Panel #3 – Legal Issues in Filmmaking
4 – 6 p.m. Panel #4 – Producing Independent Features in St. Louis

The full schedule of films can be found on the website.

The film program at Southwestern Illinois College is growing all the time, and as a result, we are looking to hire a part time instructor beginning fall semester, 2008.

We’re looking for someone who can teach courses in production (moviemaking, video editing, documentary moviemaking, screenwriting) and film studies (film history, film appreciation, and special topics in film) and possibly other courses down the road. A master’s degree in film is preferred.

Here is a link to the position announcement on the college website.

Southwestern is a great place to teach. Our facilities and equipment are fairly humble, but we have very motivated students. There are least five different teams of SWIC students in the 48 Hour Film
Challenge this year. Three of our students will have films in the upcoming St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. The school has been very supportive of the film program.

Feel free to write me directly if you have any questions (I run the film program) and pass this announcement along to anyone you know who might be interested. Thanks!

SENT VIA THE STLFILMWIRE:

I’m looking for video editors who would be interested in being part of a crew that documents a canoe trip down the Mississippi river. For students it could be a unique chance to build upon your portfolio. Or if you’ve got editing experience you might enjoy this adventurous project. Here are the details:

Video Log of Life Along the Mississippi River

Objective: To create a series of 30 minute long videos for broadcast on community television and available for free download on our website based on footage taken during a three month canoe trip down the entire length of the Mississippi river.

Time frame: Mid-August to mid-November, 2008

Further Details: This is an opportunity to be a part of a unique video experience. I plan on traveling the entire length of the Mississippi river and inviting people along the way to show me their towns and share their lives while recording it on video camera. It will be a gritty chance to record the fun and hardships of an environmentally green, no impact 2,200 mile trip down the entire country. I hope to record the changes in the river, landscape and social culture. At a minimum I would like to assemble a small group of people who would enjoy editing the footage that I send back into half hour segments to be broadcast on community television and downloaded via our website.

However, team members would also be welcome to join for part of the trip or meet along the way to help record the towns and people. It promises to be a fun experience and a chance to record for posterity the river at this period of time. It would also allow viewers who for various reasons could or
would never take this trip, experience it. The videos would be available free of charge to whoever would care to view them.

SENT VIA THE STLFILMWIRE:

Lindenwood University is looking for undergraduate students who want to do real graduate work and be part of our team. That person or persons will have the opportunity to work in our new HD studio (Avid spokespersons mentioned it at the NAB convention in Las Vegas this past week), use the P2 tapeless format, train on a Grass Valley switcher, use robotic cameras in our 1200 seat theatre, use HMI lighting, have a Chapman Pee Wee dolly at their disposal, work on Avid’s iNEWS system, edit on Avid and Final Cut Pro, and possibly have access to the new Red camera system in a new Digital Media Arts program (still pending).

This new state-of-the art studio will be good to go in August/September 2008.

You could start before then. We are installing equipment now, and this summer we will begin training on the new formats. You could be a part of something special.

LU will be teaching convergence, backpack journalism, and writing for the web. We have Emmy award-winning writers and producers, former news anchors, and renowned documentary editors teaching classes. You will be able to write, produce, direct, and edit your own programs which might be shown on LUTV, our digital channel on Charter.

If this opportunity sounds like something you might be interested in, please call Peter Carlos at 636.949.4513 or email me at pcarlos@lindenwood.edu for an interview. Let’s do lunch.
