Movies begin at dusk and I’d recommend lawn chairs or comfortable blankets for perching on the many choices within the park. This weeks movies are:

Friday August 27 – “Princess and the Frog” (G)
Saturday August 28 – “Casablanca” (NR) • SATO 48: “Love” & “CLINK”

On Saturday’s, one or more films from the April SATO 48 short film contest are included. This week’s films are “Love‘” and “Clink“. Clink, from Unknown Films, explores the surface of how the loving relationship between Don and Betty Clinkenbeard came to be, through a few simple questions that I ask them during an interview. They reveal to us some lesser known information about themselves, as well as humor us with their sarcasm. The Clinkenbeards have been together for over 60 years now, so the stories they have to tell about themselves and the Springfield, MO area are fascinating to listen to.

Tickets for Movies at Founders Park
Cost: FREE with ticket/family 4-Packs.
Tickets are available at the following locations, each Monday prior to that weekend’s movie:
Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers
Mediacom Ice Park
the Busch Municipal Building
Mediacom Offices (1533 S. Enterprise)
Admission without a free ticket is $5; children 5 years of age and under are always free.

To prepare you for tonight’s films, here’s a golden oldie made as part of SATO 48 2007 – Kirby and the Love Equation.
Kirby is a loveable 13 year old math wiz who falls in love with a much older girl.
Directed by Brandon Goodwin
Written by Brandon Godowin, Nate Black and Grant Heugel.
Featuring the song, “Neutral Conclusion” by Jeremy Larson

Local folk artist Robert E Smith has passed away. I’ve met Robert a few times and he was always surrounded by adoring fans. I first heard about his passing when Aaron J Scott tweeted it and it looks like only KY3 picked up on it today. Here is their story – Springfield artist Robert E. Smith is not just remembered but is unforgettable

My first introduction to his art are the downtown murals, including the one pictured which is at Campbell and Walnut. A search turns up plenty of information on Robert, including this short bio from what appears to be a locally produced blog

Robert E. Smith is a nationally known folk and “outsider” artist. His paintings have been featured at New York City’s prestigious Museum of American Folk Art and sold at distinguished galleries coast-to-coast. He has also been featured in The Museum of American Folk Art Encyclopedia of Twentieth Century American Folk Art. His unique visions, brimming with color, humor and incident, represent a triumph of the imagination over a strenuous and difficult life. Bibliography and great photos on Detour Art.

I was glad to see they had the film info on Robert, who was featured in “To and From”, the third of three Christmas movies created by Brandon Goodwin and Nate Black. The film includes Jeff Jenkins, Jeff Houghton and Sarah Jenkins from The Skinny Improv among others. That’s Robert in the Santa outfit, in case you were uncertain.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Somewhere down the road there will also be a film documentary, produced by Cina Canada, The Human Picture Initiative.

UPDATE – KSPR33 offered a story that includes an interview with Brandon Goodwin on his work with Robert E Smith.

As the owner and operator of Goodwin Films, he seems to have safely avoided the conventional life. The 24-year-old shoots weddings and films in places from Uganda to New Orleans. He sleeps late pretty much whenever he wants. And he manages to live happily on as little as $15,000 per year.

Brandon is also completing his 2nd year as a member of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Film Alliance of Springfield, the hosts of this website.

We will load up all 19 HTV staffers, six chaperones, and our trusty bus driver on March 18. We’ll head east on a 12-day journey to Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Virginia Beach, Charlotte, Nashville, Memphis, and plenty of points in between. Each step of the way, we will shoot stories, take photos, write blogs, and upload it all to our website. We will also send the video segments to Apple’s K-12 iTunes site.

This is the ultimate journalism field trip, one that’s been in the works since the fall of 2007. The funding is coming along, although we’re not quite at our goal just yet. Hey, we’ve got a month!

Here’s a video describing the trip from the HTV site

You can follow all of the adventures on Dave Davis’s Tumbler blog ! And add the HTV Magazine website to your list for all of the video action!

UPDATE – Chaperone and MFAS Board Member Brandon Goodwin reports in from the road on his blog

You can follow his adventures via the blog he has set up. Lots of video activity and views of the world he’s exploring. I’ve added it to the sidebar, you can find it below the comments. Enjoy!
