The Drury Cinema Club reemerges for the Spring and their first screening is this Thursday, February 26th at 7pm in the Lay Hall Auditorium. All films will now be screened on Thursdays instead of on Fridays (targeting the student audience that otherwise is headed out for the evening).

The first film is “Shotgun Stories” which features recent Oscar nominee Michael Shannon. Shotgun Stories tracks a feud that erupts between two sets of half brothers following the death of their father. Set against the cotton fields and back roads of Southeast Arkansas, these brothers discover the lengths to which each will go to protect their family.

There’s a Facebook Group you can become a Fan of and receive notices and I’ll be adding their calendar to the Film Calendar as soon as it’s complete.

Showing Friday, March 14th, 7:00pm
in Lay Hall Auditorium
Drury University Campus

KILLER OF SHEEP
(1977)

Synopsis: A Masterpiece of African American Filmmaking and one of the finest debuts in cinema history, Killer of Sheep was chosen for the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. In the Los Angeles community of Watts, Stan, a sensitive dreamer, is growing detached and numb from the toll of working at a slaughterhouse. Frustrated by money problems, he finds respite in moments of simple beauty: the warmth of a teacup against his cheek, slow dancing with his wife, holding his daughter. Combining lyrical moments with neorealist style, director Charles Burnett unfolds his story with compassion and humor. Killer of Sheep’s haunting images and extraordinary soundtrack are a revelation in this 2007 version restored from the 35mm original.

This screening for Killer of Sheep is free and open to the public as are the refreshments.

Considered “one of Allen’s most enduring accomplishments” (Boxoffice), Manhattan is a wry, touching and finely rendered portrait of modern relationships against the backdrop of urban alienation. Sumptuously photographed in black and white (Allen’s first film in that format) and accompanied by a magnificent Gershwin score, Woody Allen’s aesthetic triumph is a “prismatic portrait of a time and a place that may be studied decades hence” (Time). 42-year-old Manhattan native Isaac Davis (Allen) has a job he hates, a seventeen-year-old girlfriend, Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), he doesn’t love and a lesbian ex-wife, Jill (Meryl Streep), who’s writing a tell-all book about their marriage and whom he’d like to strangle. But when he meets his best friend’s sexy intellectual mistress, Mary (Diane Keaton), Isaac falls head over heels in lust! Leaving Tracy, bedding Mary and quitting his job are just the beginning of Isaac’s quest for romance and fulfillment in a city where sex is as intimate as a handshake and the gateway to true love is a revolving door.

A welcome return for one of Springfield’s cinema outlets. Friday, February 22nd 7pm in the Lay Hall Auditorium.
